Does Milk Provide Acid Reflux Relief?

Most every Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or acid reflux sufferer will tell you that finding relief from heartburn discomfort is on the top of their list. Many patients here in Atlanta turn to milk to relieve the burn, but this remedy does not always work for everyone.

Milk is an acidic and alkaline substance that contains a pH value on average of 6.7. For some people this is enough to neutralize the acid of their stomach, but for others it is too acidic to be beneficial for their acid reflux. But regardless of either school of thought, the best milk type for acid reflux relief is milk that is entirely fat free.

Fat free milk can provide both a protective and soothing layer in the esophagus and stomach, which protects sensitive organ tissue from the burning of stomach acids. Because the “fat” portion of milk can cause further acidity, it’s best to use nonfat milk as a preferred choice to combat heartburn and acid reflux. The thought is that when fat, processing, and antibiotics are removed from milk, it’s better able to help fight the uncomfortable symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

The bottom line: milk can be an excellent home remedy for some people, providing effective relief for their Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) symptoms, but for others milk benefits for heartburn are just wishful thinking. Overall, milk is definitely worth trying as you might be in the former group rather than the latter.
